Saved setups carry a small _meta.schema number that is raised only when the
meaning of a saved field changes — not on every release. This page walks a file from
whatever schema it was written under up to the current one, one step at a time.
Setups written before v8.12 stored their pointing under the old rule where the mount changed pier sides on its own. People keep those files for the measurements, not the pointing, and an old one often re-opens with the counterweight level or in the air — which is not where any mount rests, and reads as the model being broken. This step brings a German equatorial pointing to rest: hour angle −90° (shaft hanging), flipping the pier side if the counterweight would otherwise end up above horizontal. A pointing already at rest, and mounts with no counterweight (Alt/Az, fork, or a harmonic mount run without one), are left exactly as saved. Measurements are never altered.
